Parking Dynamics PD1 Technical Operation

Purpose & Principle of the PD1:

The PD1 parking sensor device is designed to provide effective and optimum assistance when undertaking parking and reversing manoeuvres that are often difficult and hazardous due to poor visibility offered by the latest cars, that have high backs, small rear windows and high and long bonnets. They especially help significantly when parking between two parked cars when the space available is very tight. Both front and rear sensors are indispensable in such scenarios.

Operation

The Parking Dynamics PD1 is based on an innovative concept that uses electromagnetic waves with low energy.

When reverse gear is selected the small electronic control unit (ECU) generates an electromagnetic field and transfers this to the transceiver adhesive tape that is placed on the inner side of and run the length of your bumper. The PD1 Front sensor is activated by a a switch and works in exactly the same way as the PD1 rear reverse sensor.

The magnetic tape (antenna) then sends out an elliptical electromagnetic field to cover the full area around your bumper, front, rear and sides. The transceiver antenna tape works by sending and receiving unlike ultrasonic parking and reverse sensors that require 2 types of sensors, one to send and one to receive; if they become dirty the ultrasonic performance can deteriorate.

An obstacle is then monitored by the electronic control unit (ECU) by translating this obstacle measurement into a voltage. When an object with a certain mass (i.e. people, kerbs, cars, etc) enters this elliptical zone a change in the electrical field is created and an increase in voltage is detected by the control unit and you are then informed by a series of audible tones how close you are to the object. The PD1-Vision also gives you a visual alert with integrated audio. You can then manoeuvre accordingly with plenty of time to react.

Optimum Protection:

The Parking Dynamics PD1 is able to detect the approach of an obstacle to the bumper along its entire length without any point of discontinuity unlike ultrasonic sensors.

This revolutionary device protects bumpers, particularly those painted as found on new cars because as the detection range operates and detects the obstacle until within a few inches before contact is made. Superb for tight parking spaces.

New bumpers are simply cosmetic and the application of the PD1 is perfect as it mounts on the inner side of the bumper and protects it from impact against any obstacle (unlike ultrasonic sensors that can easily break). Installation of the Parking Dynamics PD1 does not in any way alter the aesthetics of your bumper.

The audible/visual alert is generated only when the vehicle is approaching and obstacle. A fixed object in front of the bumper, for example the tow bar / towing hook, is not detected and does not affect the normal functioning of the PD1 device. It’s the only Parking Sensor available that is compatible with vehicles that have a tow bar fitted or spare wheel fixed to rear door.

Installation:

The electronic control unit (ECU) can easily be mounted in the boot/luggage compartment of your car due to its small size. The antenna sensor tape is invisible when fitted and is fully protected and not subject to possible damage when being installed.

The electrical connections are totally minimised and connects to an earth and the reverse light wire, live only when reverse gear is selected.

Parking Dynamics PD1 Sensor Operation

PD1 Rear Parking Sensor:

PD1 Rear parking sensor provides your car with full rear bumper protection when parking and reversing, alerting you to approaching objects via an audible speaker.

When reverse gear is engaged the PD1 Rear parking sensor provides an instant, automatic, self-diagnostic function that maps out the surrounding area of your rear bumper constantly monitoring this as you reverse with 100% accuracy, providing you with 3 different audible tones (Zones) alerting you of your proximity in relation to surrounding objects!

The full length of your bumper (including the sides) is protected with an ever increasing beeping sound.

As you reverse, Zone 1 (furthest away from your vehicle) detects the approaching object first.

Zone 1: 80 to 50 cm in length – The 1st tone signals with a slow “be-be-be” sound

Zone 2: 50 to 25 cm in length – The 2nd tone is a faster “be-be-be” sound

Zone 3: 25cm and less – the 3rd tone is a constant “beeeeeep” sound

PD1 Front Parking Sensor:

PD1 Front parking sensor provides your car with full front bumper protection when parking, alerting you to approaching objects via an audible speaker.

Activate the PD1 Front parking sensor by pressing the included push-button switch that mounts discretely in the area under your steering wheel for easy access. When activated the parking sensor system provides an instant, automatic, self-diagnostic function that maps out the surrounding area of your front bumper constantly monitoring this as you manoeuvre with 100% accuracy, providing you with different audible tones (Zones) alerting you of your proximity in relation to surrounding objects!

The full length of your bumper (including the sides) is protected with an ever increasing beeping sound.

As you move forwards, Zone 1 (furthest away from your vehicle) detects the approaching object first.

Zone 1: 70 cm to 20 cm in length – The 1st tone signals with a “be-be-be” sound increasing in frequency as you approach the obstacle

Zone 2: From 15 to 20 cm away from the obstacle – The 2nd tone is a low frequency “beeeeep” sound

*The PD1 Front is acutely sensitive and enables you to park in very tight spaces.

PD1 Vision Rear Parking Sensor:

PD1 Vision rear parking sensor provides your car with full rear bumper protection when parking and reversing, alerting you to approaching objects via an audible speaker and LED display.

When reverse gear is engaged the PD1 Vision rear parking sensor provides an instant, automatic, self-diagnostic function that maps out the surrounding area of your rear bumper constantly monitoring this as you reverse with 100% accuracy, providing you with 3 different audible tones and visual LED’s (Zones) alerting you of your proximity in relation to surrounding objects.

The full length of your bumper (including the sides) is protected with an ever increasing alert system. The PD1 Vision provides you with 3 distinctive visual colour LEDs on the interior mirror mounted display: Green, Yellow and Red. The displays works simultaneously with the audible tones giving you multi-featured alert system.

As you reverse, Zone 1 (furthest away from your vehicle) detects the approaching object first.

Zone 1: 80 to 50 cm in length – The 1st tone signals with a slow “be-be-be” sound and the green lights display.

Zone 2: 50 to 25 cm in length – The 2nd tone is a faster “be-be-be” sound and the yellow lights display.

Zone 3: 25cm and less – the 3rd tone is a constant “beeeeeep” sound and the red lights display.

 

Operation in Heavy Rain Conditions

When heavy rain is present the PD1 parking sensor system automatically reduces its sensitivity in order to eliminate false alarms that can be given by the movement of water on the bumper. False signals in heavy rain conditions are highly affected by specific designs of vehicles and their bumpers. Some bumper designs have a higher chance of false alarms in heavy rain conditions.

False signals are given as a result of water flowing between the car body and the bumper. Parking Dynamics have reduced this as much as possible with good results within the PD1 software for optimum usage.

However once the software does recognise that water is present during a reversing manoeuvre the first and second zones are eliminated to prevent continuous false signals and the next alert zones are utilised until the system is reset and water eliminated.

This is intelligent in itself and surpasses ultrasonics in such scenarios ensuring a safe and secure parking and reversing manoeuvre.
