Tips to Improve On Driving Safety

Driving Safety is the key to avoid casualties in accidents, where rash driving is on the rise. The deterioration of safe driving and increase in the death toll is clearly evident from the records. As provided in a report by the Department of Transport on road casualties in Great Britain in 2007, the number of people killed in road accident in 2007 was 2943. Nearly 30720 people have been seriously injured in the same year. Moreover, there were 247780 road casualties in Great Britain in 2007.     

One of the major problems with the youth is drug-driving. It was found that nearly 85% of the motorists aged between 22 and 25 are involved in drug-driving. Around 40% of the drivers admitted that they had taken illicit substance while driving and 25% confessed that they drove a car within 12 hours of taking the drugs. However, new tests such as skin and breathalyser tests have been designed to determine whether a driver has taken heroin, cocaine or any other designer drugs. This is a useful tool for ensuring driver safety.   

Rules for safe driving 

Apart from knowing the basic car safety norms and having a good control of the steering, a driver should be educated in the elemental rules for driving safety, which he/she should know and follow. For more driver education, here are certain rules that can be of great help: 

Don’t follow closely: Following a car to closely is risky. If the car ahead of you suddenly puts on the brake, your car would surely smash into the car ahead. Remember even the modern anti-lock brakes and tractions wouldn’t ensure driving safety in such cases.   

Maintain the three second rule: It is important for every driver to know and abide by the three second rule. First observe the vehicle passing before you when it passes a fixed object like a pole or tree, now count "one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand." If you reach the object before the counting finishes, then you are following the vehicle very closely. It is advised to double the distance (nearly by six seconds) in poor weather.    

Maintaining the right speed: It is not true that speed always kills. However, inappropriate speed can lead to road accidents. For instance, it is permissible to drive at 65 mph on the highway. However, the conditions may differ in heavy rain, as your visibility would be less and stopping ability of the brakes would reduce. If you ride at the same speed there are high chances of accident. In a similar way, while driving on an unknown road and especially a country road with blind curves, it would be advisable to adjust the road speed as a local would have done for driving safety. You must move at a speed that suits the conditions and your comfort level.   

Always use the turn signals: While driving it is imperative that you use the turn signals to make other drivers aware of your intentions, maintaining the driving manners at the same time. It would be silly to expect other motorists to know that you are planning to make a right turn. Signalling is a responsibility of the every driver to ensure the safety of bicyclists, motorcyclists and even pedestrians.  

Use Parking Sensors: Parking is an important aspect of car safety. This has contributed to the rising popularity of parking sensors. The sensors provide feedback to the driver and frequency of the parking sensor indicates distance from an object. As an object comes closer the beep becomes faster, warning the driver, so that he/she stops the car immediately to avoid collision. These parking sensors can help you to avoid reverse accidents.

In order to ensure driver safety as well as car safety, drive with the flow of the traffic and leave the enforcement of speed limits to the police.
